Potassium t-butoxide (potassium t-butoxide) is an important organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₄KO and a molar mass of 112.21 g/mol. It is a white or off-white solid powder with a density of 0.929 g/cm₃, a melting point of 240°C, a boiling point of 275°C, and is reactive with water. Potassium t-butoxide is a strong alkaline compound with a relatively weak nucleophilicity. It is soluble in THF and is commonly used in dehydrohalogenation reactions of halogenated hydrocarbons.
Potassium t-butoxide can be prepared by reacting t-butanol with metallic potassium followed by evaporation of the t-butanol under reduced pressure. It is widely used in condensation, rearrangement, and ring-opening reactions in organic synthesis in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and pesticide industries.
Potassium t-butoxide is a corrosive organic alkaline product with strong hygroscopicity. It should be stored in a sealed container and protected from fire and sunlight during storage and transportation. It should be stored in a cool, ventilated, and dry place.
